1954. Moscow. Nadezhda, a young actress, has just been arrested by the feared secret police. She soon realises that her interrogator is none other than Lavrentiy Beria, the most feared man in the USSR. The man expected to succeed Stalin as Soviet leader. Beria offers her a pact with the devil – if she submits to him, he will release her imprisoned father from a concentration camp in Kazakhstan. Meanwhile in the camp, her father Platon is trying to survive the cold and the violence. Pushed to the limit by the guards’ brutality, he and other inmates rise up against the Soviet authorities.

Find out whether Nadezhda and Platon make it out alive. Find out how Soviet citizens coped with a regime determined to crush them. Find out how freedom is born from the worst tortures that humans inflict on each other.

This Sunday at 12 noon come along to see a reading of Freedom Born from Torture’s Fires by professional actors at the Cracked Actors Theatre, Albert Park.
