“Us Girls Won’t Put One Another Away” (supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants)

30 April @ 6:00 pm - 7:40 pm AEST

Multi-Awardee at the Teatro Politeama Pratese International Songwriting Competition (Italy) during the mid 2010s and semi-finalist at the International Songwriting Competition in 2020 (USA), Italian-Australian singer-songwriter Ilaria Crociani has taken advantage of the isolation of the recurrent Covid-19 lockdowns in Melbourne to read, study and write new songs which, last year, were able to gain her recognition of both a “2021 ABC Jazz Commissioning Fund” and a “2021 City of Melbourne Quick Art Grant”.

“Us Girls Won’t Put One Another Away” , created with the support of the City of Melbourne Arts Grants, is a collection of original composition that want to capture the utterly fascinating lives and the voices of Little Lon’s residents Sara Saqui, Madame Fraser, Ellisabeth Scott, Janet Dibben, Enrichetta Righettini and many more. This creative nonfictional music work is a voyage in time, through murders, filicides, successful brothels enterprises, executions, but also feminism, and even redemption and healing through art.

Honouring these long forgotten women of the late 19th century, remembering their successful adventures or the heart-wrenching dramas they had to face during their times is not only a way to keeping them alive, but also an invaluable way to give us a perspective on our own lives.
